Mexico Arrests People Trafficker Wanted by U.S.

MEXICO CITY – A man wanted in Mexico for bribery and sought by the United States for sex trafficking of children, among other charges, was arrested by federal officers, the Attorney General’s Office said.

Gerardo Salazar, also known as Pedro Salamanca, was caught in the central Mexican state of Tlaxcala, where he is from, thanks to an anonymous tip, the AG’s office said.

Salazar admitted to the officers that he was the subject of a U.S. arrest warrant and offered them a house worth 200,000 pesos (about $15,700) and an automobile if they let him go, the AG’s office said.

Salazar, who goes by the nickname “El Gallo” (The Rooster), is listed on the FBI’s Web site as one of the most-wanted people traffickers.

“Salazar and other members of his group allegedly recruited and enticed young Mexican females, including two minors, to engage in prostitution. Salazar and his associates would romance the victims and convince them to come to the United States as their girlfriends. While in the United States, Salazar and his traffickers allegedly forced the victims into prostitution through beatings, threats, deception, and other forms of coercion,” the FBI says.

Salazar was taken to a prison in Tlaxcala and will be extradited to the United States, the AG’s office said. EFE
