Mexican Soccer Player Antonio de Nigris Dies

ATHENS – Mexican soccer player Antonio de Nigris died early Monday in the Greek city of Larissa, whose club he played for, after feeling ill.

The 31-year-old player died while being transported to a hospital by paramedics, who had been called by his wife, Greek media reported.

The cause of death has not been officially released, but Greek media outlets said De Nigris, who played for Spain’s Villarreal and Polideportivo Ejido, among other clubs, during his career, had a heart attack.

De Nigris, who played for Mexico’s Monterrey club, had been playing for the First-Division team in Larissa since August.

A consular official traveled to Larissa to provide “all the administrative assistance and moral support” possible to the player’s wife and 5-year-old daughter, Mexican Ambassador to Greece Manuel Cosio told Efe.

Mexican diplomats in Athens will assist the family with arrangements to send the body home to Mexico, Cosio said.

The coroner’s office plans to conduct an autopsy Monday to determine the cause of death, Larissa club spokesman Sotiris Markus told Efe.

Those close to De Nigris said the player had not complained about feeling ill or having any pain, Markus said.

De Nigris, who made his professional debut in 1999 with Monterrey, played for America, Puebla and Pumas UNAM in the Mexican league.

He also played for Colombia’s Once Caldas and Turkish teams Gaziantepspor, Ankaraspor and Ankaragucu before joining Larissa. EFE
