50 Sickened by Tainted Food in Rural Paraguay

ASUNCION – At least 50 people became sick after eating at a wedding celebration in the central province of San Pedro, Paraguayan media reported Sunday.

The food poisoning occurred in Guayaybi district, where people celebrating the wedding of Roque Rojas, 25, and Ida Idalina Godoy, 25, as well as the baptism of the couple’s 1-year-old daughter, got sick after eating sausages with mayonnaise, cakes, soft drinks and fruit juices.

Wedding guests reported experiencing nausea and headaches, followed by vomiting and diarrhea.

The worst-affected people, mostly children, were taken to the emergency room at San Pedro’s Santani Hospital.

“We have an emergency situation. Many patients are seriously poisoned. Medical specialists are on the way and we are using all the resources available to deal with this difficult situation,” Dr. Ilsen Casco told Asuncion’s ABC Color newspaper.

San Pedro prosecutor Lilian Ruiz, who is investigating the mass poisoning, said the foods served to guests would be tested by a lab to try to determine the cause of the illnesses.
