BOGOTA – Seven FARC rebels and four government soldiers were killed in separate engagements in southwestern and eastern Colombia, the military said. All of the guerrilla losses took place during an army sweep in the eastern province of Guaviare, where three other insurgents were captured and a fourth FARC fighter defected to the troops. The operation in Guaviare, which is largely jungle, targeted a “logistics node” of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the military said in a statement. The center of the fighting was Pueblo Nuevo, a village near San Jose del Guaviare, the provincial capital. After the battle, the troops seized 11 rifles, nine handguns, two field radios and a ton of food and other supplies. Separately, four soldiers were killed in a FARC ambush in Caqueta province. The army said the troops were traveling in civilian dress when their vehicle was destroyed by remote-control bombs. Military commanders blamed the attack on the FARC’s elite Teofilo Forero Column. The FARC, which has battled a succession of Colombian governments since 1964, once numbered close to 20,000 fighters but is now thought to have around 9,000 combatants in its ranks. EFE |
