SAO PAULO – The Brazilian air force recovered the body of a second person killed last week when a plane with 11 people aboard made a forced landing in the Amazon jungle.
The body of flight mechanic Marcelo dos Santos Dias was found near where the plane went down in the Itui River, the official Agencia Brasil news agency said.
The body of Joao de Abreu Filho, a National Health Foundation official, was found Saturday inside the submerged aircraft by divers.
The nine survivors were rescued last Friday by military helicopters and taken to the airport in Cruzeiro do Sul, the city in Acre state where the Cessna C-98 Caravan had taken off.
Air traffic control lost contact with the plane during the flight from Cruzeiro do Sul to Tabatinga, in Amazonas state.
Authorities learned later that the Caravan made a forced landing on the Itui River between the villages of Aurelio and Rio Novo.
Aboard the aircraft were four crew members and seven Health Ministry officials who were taking part in a campaign to vaccinate Indians in some 50 villages in the Amazon region.
The aircraft was found Friday morning by Matis Indians, who informed authorities.
The air force said it did not have an estimated date for completion of the crash investigation. EFE
