BOGOTA – The leader of the Los Paisas gang, one of Colombia’s so-called emerging paramilitary groups linked to drug trafficking, has been arrested, officials said.
Luis Edwin Quiroga was captured in Giron, a city in Santander province, which continued to weaken that organization “whose criminal activities have been the scourge of urban centers and rural areas in the central part of the country along the Troncal del Caribe” highway, officials said.
Quiroga was wanted by prosecutors in Santa Marta on criminal conspiracy and extortion charges.
The suspect took command of Los Paisas and is believed to have been behind the “homicides, displacements, threats and extortion occurring in that part of Magdalena province,” officials said.
Quiroga demobilized from the Tayrona Resistance Front of the defunct United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, or AUC, militia federation under the terms of the peace agreement with President Alvaro Uribe’s administration. EFE
