MEXICO CITY – Through Sept. 15, popular Mexican singers, including Natalia Lafourcade, Susana Zabaleta, Ely Guerra, Regina Orozco and Cecilia Toussaint, will offer nightly performances on two Mexico City buses. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard on Tuesday evening kicked off the program of bus concerts, in which one of the singers will perform each night, but the inaugural performance featured 15-minute sets from each of them. The organizers of the event said that the concerts will run for an hour starting at 8:00 p.m. and are part of the festivities of the 2010 Bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution. They said that two buses specially outfitted by the capital government will be used for the performances, adding that they have been adapted with lighting and sound equipment and will have a seating capacity of 150 people. The singers and two musicians will perform in small areas on the buses set up for them, and at some truck stops screens will be set up to publicly transmit what is happening on board the vehicles. The organizers explained that the idea was hatched by singers Aurora and Amandititita and is aimed at getting capital residents to enjoy these artists during the celebrations. The artists call themselves “Las corregidoras” (The magistrates) in homage to the heroine of the struggle for independence, Magistrate Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, who helped organized the popular revolt in 1810 against Spanish rule. The organizers said that the recitals will wrap up on Sept. 15 in the Nezahualcoyotl university forum, where all the singers will perform together at the closing concert. EFE |
