Firm Offers Cuba Tour Packages for Juanes Concert

SAN JOSE – A travel agency in Costa Rica has put some special tour packages on sale to aid the controversial concert being staged by Colombian superstar Juanes in Havana on Sept. 20.

The deals offered by the Easa Almendares agency range in price from $400 to $500, including the air ticket, three nights in a hotel and breakfast in Havana.

Also included at no additional charge are a tour of the city and transportation to the concert, the travel agency told Efe.

The company did not want to say how many package tours it has sold to date.

Juanes’s concert has drawn sharp criticism from some Cuban exile groups in Miami that contend the message should be about bringing freedom to the Cuban people, the release of political prisoners and respect for human rights.

A number of Cuban exile groups, however, have expressed support for the planned concert in the Cuban capital.

The popular singer of “La Camisa Negra” (The Black Shirt) and “A Dios le Pido” (I Ask God) said that his show in Havana is a “white concert” with no political coloring, despite having received threats by Twitter because of the project.

Juanes is backed by other important artists such as Spaniards Buika and Julio Iglesias, who said that the artist’s intention is to go to Havana “to sing and nothing more.”

He also has the backing of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who said last week during a visit to Havana that “the Juanes concert is a positive expression, it’s musical, it improves ties between countries and should not be a political initiative.”

Juanes will be joined in Havana by Spanish singer Miguel Bose and Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañon, as well as Cuban performers Silvio Rodriguez and Los Van Van.

Cuban exiles are planning a Sept. 20 “concert for freedom” in Miami. EFE
