ASUNCION – At least 160 people were arrested in and around the Paraguayan capital in disturbances that started after a soccer match between traditional rivals Cerro Porteño and Olimpia.
More than 25,000 people were in the stands at Defensores del Chaco Stadium to see Cerro eke out a 1-0 victory in a penalty-filled game that saw five players expelled, while rowdy fans clashed outside.
Police from Asuncion’s 2nd Precinct arrested 48 people for violating Law 1866, which deals with violence in stadiums, though only one of them is likely to face charges.
A reporter for the Popular newspaper suffered a wrist injury in another violent incident that started as fans poured out of the stadium.
In San Lorenzo, located 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) east of Asuncion, a bus carrying 100 Olimpia hooligans was stopped and held for several hours by police, who seized sharp objects and small quantities of marijuana, the press reported.
Cerro Porteño fans, meanwhile, smashed the windshield of a municipal bus in Lambare, located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) south of the capital.
Olimpia defender Dario Caballero sustained a cut in the head when unruly fans threw ice at him from the stands before the match started. EFE
