Death Toll from Swine Flu Rises to 16 in Bolivia

LA PAZ – Two more people have died from the AH1N1 flu virus, raising the death toll from the disease in Bolivia to 16, health officials said.

A 55-year-old man died Monday in La Paz, while health officials confirmed that a 65-year-old man who died on Aug. 13 had been infected with the AH1N1 flu virus, national epidemiology director Eddy Martinez told Efe.

The majority of the swine flu deaths have been reported in La Paz province, with seven, and the eastern province of Santa Cruz, where five people have died from the disease.

Two people died in the southwestern province of Potosi, one in the central province of Cochabamba and one in the southern province of Tarija from the flu.

A total of 953 people have been infected in Bolivia with the AH1N1 flu virus, according to Health Ministry figures, with 652 cases, or 69 percent of the total, reported in Santa Cruz.

The Health Ministry has 40,000 doses of the medication used to treat those infected with the AH1N1 flu virus.

The northern Amazonian province of Pando is the only region in Bolivia where no swine flu cases have been confirmed. EFE
