Little Girl is 8th Swine-Flu Victim in Colombia

BOGOTA – The death toll from the AH1N1 flu virus has risen to eight in Colombia with the confirmation of a little girl’s death in Bogota, the National Health Institute, or INS, said.

An INS communique said on Friday that the child was taken to the doctor on July 11 and died two days later.

The patient “was hospitalized and treated in the intensive care unit, receiving the recommended treatment including antibiotics and Oseltamivir. Her condition, however, evolved unfavorably and she unfortunately died on July 13,” the press release said.

According to the INS report, the current situation of the new flu virus indicates that there are presently 202 confirmed cases, including the eight people who died.

On May 3 the nation’s first case of contagion was confirmed, that of a man who lives in Zipaquira, a city near Bogota, who a few days before had returned from a trip to the Mexican seaside resort of Cancun, Mexico.

One month later, on June 4, the first swine-flu death occurred, that of a 23-year-old woman in the Colombian capital.
