Svitolina Beats Halep, Moves to Semifinals in Shenzhen

SHENZHEN – Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina secured her place in the semifinals of the WTA Finals on Wednesday after she beat Romania’s Simona Halep 7-5, 6-3.

It was the No. 8 seed’s second victory of the tournament in Shenzhen.

Svitolina’s win had an air of revenge about it as Halep, the No. 5 seed, had defeated the Ukrainian in the semis of this year’s Qatar Open and Wimbledon Championships.

“I try to work every single point and start from the beginning just trying to take one point at a time,” said Svitolina after her victory.

“I don’t really think so much about if it’s good, if it’s bad.

“Just taking every point, every game at a time.

“I try to step on the court and to always have positive mindset.”

Halep will face Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic on Friday, with the winner of that match sailing into the semis.

Pliskova had a 6-3 lead over Bianca Andreescu when the Canadian withdrew due to injury.
