MADRID – Egan Bernal will not be competing in this year’s edition of the Giro d’Italia due to a broken collarbone, the Colombian’s cycling team has confirmed.
The cyclist sustained the injury during training, Team Ineos said on Twitter.
“Unfortunately we can confirm that Egan Bernal has suffered a broken collarbone in a training accident ahead of the Giro d’Italia,” the team said.
The 22-year-old was considered one of the favorites for the Alpine competition, which he was going to lead for the British team.
In March, the cyclist won the Paris-Nice road cycling race. His compatriot Nairo Quintana came second.
The Giro d’Italia kicks off on May 11.
