Salah Leads Liverpool to 1-0 Win over Brighton & Hove Albion

FALMER, England – A second-half penalty kick successfully converted by Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah led Liverpool on Saturday to defeat home side Brighton & Hove Albion to extend its Premier League lead.

Liverpool returned to its winning ways after losing its previous two games: 2-1 against Manchester City in the league and then to the Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round.

But the mission was not easy as Liverpool’s formidable trio of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino was unable to find the back of the net throughout the first half.

The Reds had to wait until the 50th minute, when Salah delivered from the 12-yard mark, having been downed inside the area by German midfielder Pascal Gross.

This was Salah’s 14th goal of the season, putting him in a tie with Arsenal’s Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Tottenham Hotspur England striker Harry Kane in the 2018/2019 Premier League’s top scorer position.

Kane can boost his tally on Sunday when Tottenham takes on Manchester United on Matchday 22.

After the win, Liverpool has 57 points atop the Premier League table, seven points ahead of Manchester City, which will face off against the Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

Brighton & Hove Albion, meanwhile, is 13th in the standings with 26 points.

Elsewhere, Leicester City fell short 2-1 against a short-handed Southampton, who saw French defender Yan Valery being sent off during the dying minutes of the first half after being booked twice.

Shortly after Valery’s incident, Irish forward Shane Long doubled Southampton’s lead initially achieved by English midfielder James Ward-Prowse in the 11th minute.

During the second half, Leicester City managed only to narrow the gap thanks to Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi’s goal in the 58th minute.

In another Premier League action, Watford prevailed over Crystal Palace 2-1, and Burnley defeated Fulham 2-1.
