Iraq Thrashes Yemen 3-0, Advances to Asian Cup Last-16

SHARJAH, UAE – The Iraq national soccer team booked its ticket to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup round of 16 by defeating Yemen 3-0 in the teams’ Group D second-round event held Saturday at Sharjah Stadium, in the United Arab Emirates city of Sharjah.

With the win, Iraq maintained second-place in the standings with six points on goal differential behind Iran, while Yemen stayed last with no points.

Forward Mohanad Ali Kadhim netted Iraq’s opener just 11 minutes into the game, on a long-range right-footed shot.

Iraq midfielder Bashar Resan Bonyan doubled the scoring eight minutes later, on another right-footed shot from outside the box, seizing on an assist by teammate defender Ali Adnan Kadhim.

After the break, forward Alaa Abbas sealed the win in the first minute of injury time, with a left-footed shot from the center of the box, as he was assisted by midfielder Ahmed Yaseen Gheni with a headed pass.

With its second defeat in the group stage, Asian-Cup-debutant Yemen stayed last in the table with no points, on goal differential behind third-placed Vietnam.
