BEIJING – China’s President Xi Jinping has congratulated Brazil’s new leader Jair Bolsonaro and underlined his willingness to respect the fundamental interests of both countries, state-owned Xinhua agency reported.
Xi’s special envoy attended the inauguration of Bolsonaro on Jan. 1 and gave him a letter Wednesday, stressing that both countries had the responsibility of improving their economies.
China’s leader praised Bolsonaro’s post-victory statements in which he committed to maintaining ties with China, Brazil’s main trading partner, despite ideological differences.
Xi said China was willing to improve bilateral relations in the long term while respecting the fundamental interests of both countries.
Bolsonaro will serve a four-year term.
