MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s Profepa environmental protection agency said on Thursday that authorities confiscated a Siberian tiger cub from a restaurant in the country’s capital city.
Profepa inspectors went to the restaurant in Mexico City’s Iztapalapa borough based on a tip and found a female cub “between 4 and 5 months old with a mild case of hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency),” the agency said in a statement.
The tiger is receiving medical treatment, Profepa said.
Inspectors took charge of the cub after determining that the owners did not have the necessary authorizations to keep the exotic animal as a pet.
Siberian tigers, the world’s largest felines, are found only in the forests of southeast Russia, near the Chinese border.
The species is listed in Appendix 1 to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
