GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The head of operations for the municipal police in the western Mexican town of El Salto was murdered Wednesday, the Jalisco state Attorney General’s Office said.
The attack on Jose Manuel De Anda occurred during the morning as he was driving home at the end of his shift, the AG Office said in a statement.
Another person traveling in the vehicle was wounded.
Police sources from El Salto, a Guadalajara suburb, said the attack was carried out by armed men in a pickup truck and an SUV.
The murder comes amid a wave of violence in Jalisco, where last Monday six state police officers were killed and another wounded after being ambushed in the town of La Huerta.
After the assault, which occurred as the assailants were attempting to free a person who had been arrested, accomplices set fire to vehicles in at least two locations to hamper the police pursuit, according to the AG Office.
Last weekend saw a grenade attack on the US Consulate in Guadalajara, Jalisco’s capital.
