HONG KONG – Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza advanced on Friday to the Hong Kong Open semifinals, after prevailing over Thai Luksika Kumkhum 6-2, 7-5.
It took the world No. 13 one hour and 45 minutes to defeat world No. 105 Kumkhum in their first-ever career encounter.
“I am very happy with the way I am playing so far. Luksika played great today and made it a real battle out there,” Muguruza said after the match.
“To be honest, without the crowd, we would not be here, so thank you, all the fans, for coming out here and cheering for us,” she added.
The Venezuela-born 25-year-old is set to next take on either Elina Svitolina of Ukraine or Qiang Wang of China.
