Landslide Kills 37 Miners in East Democratic Republic of the Congo

KINSHASA – At least 37 miners have been killed in a landslide that buried a gold mine in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, authorities told EFE on Friday.

The Misisi gold mine collapsed last week after days of heavy rains in the Fizi region.

“We continue working on this. It is feared the death toll, which is still temporary, will increase,” Nganda Willy, president of the Congolese civil society organization in the area, told EFE over the phone.

Willy, who believes there were minors working during the time of the collapse, added the exact number of workers was unknown as not all of them were registered by their employers.

Mining accidents are common in the African country, especially in those unauthorized mines that are run by various groups of militias.
