Argentina Gets First Win at Volleyball Menís World Championship

FLORENCE, Italy Ė Argentina has picked up its first win at the Volleyball Menís World Championship, defeating the Dominican Republic 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-15) in first-round action on Friday.

The South Americans needed a victory after losing their opening Pool A match to Belgium 3-1 on Wednesday and took care of business after a closely contested first set at the Mandela Forum in Florence.

Cristian Poglajen led the way with 12 points for Argentina, while Sebastian Sole tallied 11 points, six of them on blocks.

The top scorers for the Dominican Republic were Henry Omar Tapia Santana and Henry Antonio Lopez Capellan, both of whom finished with 11 points.

Argentina out-blocked the Dominicans 9-1 over the course of the 82-minute match.

In one other Pool A contest on Friday, Slovenia recorded its second win in as many matches by defeating Japan 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-13).

Powerhouse Italy is in first place in Pool A, followed by Slovenia and Argentina, while the Dominican Republic is in last place.

Next up for Argentina on Saturday will be Italy, a co-host of this quadrennial event along with Bulgaria.

The Dominicans will take on Italy in their next first-round match on Sunday.

Sixteen of 24 teams (four from each of the four pools) will advance to the second round of the Volleyball Menís World Championship, which runs through Sept. 30.
