SANTO DOMINGO – Half the members of the Dominican armed forces are on standby due to the possible effects of Tropical Storm Isaac, Defense Minister Ruben Dario Paulino Sem said on Friday.
He made the announcement following a meeting with the army commander, Gen. Estanislao Gonell Regalado, and the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), Juan Manuel Mendez, to evaluate the current situation and finalize details for dealing with the situation.
Paulino Sem said the army’s UHR rescue unit “is ready to deal with whatever adverse situation this weather phenomenon could cause,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement posted on its social networks.
The COE has 14 provinces on green alert for possible urban and rural flash floods, as well as for mudslides.
Isaac, which has risen to a Category 1 hurricane, is losing force and “is forecast to become a tropical depression on Sunday and degenerate into a wave on Monday,” the US National Hurricane Center said.
