Japan Beats Dominican Republic at Volleyball World Championships

VALENCIA, Italy Ė The Japanese volleyball team beat the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-16) on Thursday in a Group A match of the Volleyball World Championships in Valencia, Italy.

Japan now has one win, one loss, while the Dominicans fell for the second time in the same number of games.

Masahiro Yanagida and Yuki Ishikawa led the attack of the Japanese team, while Dominican Henry Lopez produced 14 points, becoming the top scorer of his team, an effort that was insufficient to break Japan.

Japan started the game guided by Issei Otake and Ishikawa, who gave their team a 12-8 lead.

The Dominicans tried to close the gap in the first set, but Japanís block line destroyed their attempt.

In the second set, the Caribbean team equalized to 7-7, but some errors made and Japanís attack struck back for a resounding 25-16.

In the third set, the errors of the Dominican Republic continued and Japan returned to take an early lead (6-3). Although Henry Antonio Lopez tried to strike back with two shots, Fukuzawa responded in the same way, making the Japanese team win by 25-16 in the third and final set of the match.

The Dominican Republic will next play against Argentina on Friday, while Japan will face Slovenia.
