MONTEVIDEO – United Nations Foundation Communications and Public Relations manager Lindsay Pearse highlighted on Wednesday the role of media in furthering the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Pearse, who participated in a workshop organized by the United Nations Foundation and Spanish-language news agency Inter Press Service, told EFE that media outlets are key in disseminating SDG-related information.
“We feel it is crucial to carry out these workshops because the media plays a very important part in conveying the message,” she said. “How would people know about SDGs without the media? And if people don’t know, How will they hold the authorities accountable?”
The UN Foundation representative acknowledged that, while reporters often provide “day-to-day” information that glosses over the 17 goals – which aim to end poverty and foster gender equality, quality education, sustainable energy and climate action – the agenda is currently more present.
“There is still much work to do,” Pearse said. “I believe the media gave a big boost to SDGs when they were adopted in 2015, but there may have been a drop since then.”
The workshop titled “How to Apply SDGs to the Journalistic Agenda” – which will run until Thursday at Montevideo’s Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) office, will consist of seven sessions in which experts and officials will discuss the various goals.
Participants include Uruguayan Water Director Daniel Greif, UN Women local head Magdalena Furtado and Alvaro Garcia, the country’s chief of Planning and Budgeting.
