Macara Wins, Grabs Top Spot in Ecuadorian League

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador – Macara edged Universidad Catolica 1-0 and grabbed the top spot in the Ecuadorian league standings, while Independiente del Valle savored its first victory in the second phase of the season, a 3-1 win over current champion Emelec.

Moises Corozo scored the goal on Saturday that cemented Macara’s win and gave it its 10 points in the standings, vis-a-vis Barcelona’s 9-point total prior to its crucial away match on Monday against Deportivo Cuenca, which has 6 points.

Macara used a spiderweb-like defense right from the start and scored its lone goal on one of its rare attacks but then continued with its defensive work and thwarted the sporadic counterattacks mounted by its rival.

Meanwhile, Independiente del Valle cruised to victory under the sure guidance of Spanish coach Ismael Rescalvo.

Jhegson Mendez opened the scoring for the ultimate victors, with Marlon De Jesus tying things up and then it was Efren Mera and Steven Plaza who added the subsequent two tallies for the 3-1 result.

It was Emelec’s second road loss after falling 2-1 to Liga de Quito.

On Sunday, the fourth round of play will continue with the Deportivo Cuenca-Barcelona and Guayaquil City-Delfin contests, and will conclude on Monday with the Liga de Quito-Aucas faceoff.
