Belgiumís Naert Wins Marathon Gold at Euro Championships with Record Time

BERLIN Ė Belgiumís Koen Naert won on Sunday the menís marathon gold medal at the 2018 European Championships with a record time of two hours, nine minutes and 51 seconds.

Naert, who has become the first Belgian to claim this trophy since his compatriot long-distance runner Karel Lismont did in 1971, got the gold after his progress in the last five kilometers of the marathon.

Switzerlandís Tadesse Abraham, European champion of half marathon in 2016, won the silver medal, clocking two hours, 11 minutes and 24 seconds, while Italyís Yassine Rachik got the bronze with a time of two hours, 12 minutes and nine seconds.

Spainís Javier Guerra Polo was the best Spaniard in the marathon, as he was about to win the bronze, but finished fourth with a time of two hours, 12 minutes and 22 seconds, while his compatriot Jesus EspaŮa Cobo came sixth.
