Sevilla Ready to Compete in Spanish Super Cup Final, Head Coach Says

SEVILLE, Spain – Sevilla FC head coach Pablo Machin said on Saturday he was eager for his club to take on FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and put up a better showing than in the 2018 Copa del Rey final.

Sevilla, the Copa del Rey runner-up, will take on Barcelona, the La Liga and Copa del Rey champion, in a one-match Super Cup on Sunday in the Moroccan city of Tangier.

“The key word in a match like this is to compete,” Machin said in a press conference held at his club’s sports city.

He said his squad needed to will the match in its favor against a team filled with superstars that is a “specialist in winning finals.”

Referring to the 5-0 drubbing Sevilla suffered at the hands of Barcelona in the April 21 Copa del Rey final, Machin admitted that the result was upsetting for the club and its fans.

But he said Sunday’s match was a new opportunity for the players to show what they are capable of and “to go out with their heads high no matter the result.”

The Spanish Super Cup is typically a match-up pitting the Copa del Rey and La Liga champions.

But since Barcelona won both titles, Copa del Rey runner-up Sevilla will be the Catalans’ opponents.

Unlike all previous editions, the 2018 Spanish Super Cup will be contested as a single match at a neutral venue.
