BERLIN Ė Spainís race walkers Alvaro Martin and Maria Perez won a historic two gold medals for their country in the menís and womenís 20km race walk at the 2018 European Championships.
In the menís event, Martin claimed the gold with a time of one hour, 20 minutes and 42 seconds, six seconds ahead of his compatriot Diego Garcia Carrera, who got the silver.
Russiaís Vasiliy Mizinov won the bronze.
Although Saturday started with a scare when firefighters began to check sewers in search of the origin of a suspicious smell of gas, it ended with a resounding success for Spaniards, as Perez clinched the gold in the womenís 20km walk.
Perez topped her opponents, clocking one hour, 26 minutes and 36 seconds.
The Spaniard was followed by second-placed Czech Republicís Anezka Drahotova with a time of one hour, 27 minutes and three seconds.
Antonella Palmisano won the bronze, clocking one hour, 27 minutes and 30 seconds.
