Police: Two Law-Enforcement Officers Killed in Shooting in Canada

TORONTO, Canada – Two of the four people killed in a shooting Friday morning in the eastern Canadian city of Fredericton were law-enforcement officers, local police said.

“Of the four people killed in this morning’s shootings on Brookside Drive, two were Fredericton Police officers. No names are being released at this time. Please appreciate this is a difficult time for their families and our colleagues,” the Fredericton Police force said on Twitter.

Earlier Friday, the police force in that city – the capital of the province of New Brunswick, located some 850 kilometers (528 miles) east of Ottawa – confirmed the fatalities and asked residents to stay clear of the area.

Local television footage showed police had cut off traffic on a two-kilometer (1.2-mile) stretch of Brookside Drive.

About an hour and a half after announcing the shooting and fatalities, the Fredericton Police force tweeted that a suspect had been apprehended.

“At this time we can confirm that we have one suspect in custody. Police continue to have the Brookside area contained for the foreseeable future as the investigation is ongoing,” the Twitter post read.
