Chinese Player Banned for 6 Games for Racially Abusing Demba Ba

SHANGHAI – Chinese footballer Zhang Li has been banned for six games for racially insulting Senegal’s Demba Ba, the Chinese Football Association announced on Friday.

Demba Ba, who currently plays for Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League, has played for English Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Newcastle.

The incident occurred on Aug. 4 during a league match between Changchun Yatai and Shanghai Shenhua.

According to a statement by the CFA, Zhang Li would be banned for six games with immediate effect and receive a fine of 42,000 yuan ($6,128) for racially insulting the Senegalese player.

“The Chinese Super League has players of many different skin colors. We should respect our opponents and there should be no discrimination,” Shanghai Shenhua manager Wu Jingui said.
