ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – England coach Gareth Southgate told EFE on Friday that he will make as few changes as possible to the line-up when the Three Lions face Belgium for third place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
England squandered a 1-0 lead in the semifinal against Croatia to lose 2-1, with the winner coming in extra time.
“In terms of mentality, it’s obviously been a really difficult couple of days for us. We were 20 minutes from a World Cup final and then in extra time 10 minutes from a shootout to get to the World Cup. So, emotionally, a very difficult few days,” Southgate said in response to question from EFE during a press conference on the eve of Saturday’s clash with Belgium.
The coach said that his players were highly motivated by the chance to win only the second World Cup medal in England’s history.
“We want to finish the tournament well. We have set a standard in how we work, we have set a standard in the way that we play, and we want to aspire to that level every time we go out,” he said.
