Dominican Republic, US, Canada, Brazil Qualify in Women’s Volleyball for 2019 Pan Am Games

SANTO DOMINGO – The Dominican Republic, the United States, Brazil and Canada qualified for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, as the quarterfinals of the Women’s Pan-American Volleyball Cup were decided this week in Santo Domingo.

The home team beat Puerto Rico 25-21, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10 on Thursday, allowing them to advance to the semifinals, where they will face Brazil.

Canada and the United States are the other two teams that reached the semifinals.

The Canadians, in Group A, and the Brazilians, in Group C, came out ahead in the group round with a perfect 3-0 winning streak, allowing them to go straight to the semifinals.

The US reached the first spot in Group B and beat the Colombians in three sets in the quarter finals, who had reached the second spot in Group C.

The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico faced off after reaching the first spot in groups A and B, respectively.

The highest-scoring players for the Dominicans were Yonkaira Peña, with 20 points, Brayelin Martinez, with 18, and Gina Mambru, who scored 11 points.

The Puerto Rican players who scored the most points were Daly Santana (24), Shirley Ferrer (16), and Neira Ortiz and Alba Hernandez (10 each).

Four teams will face off to qualify for the last spot in the 2019 Pan American Games: Cuba, Colombia, Peru and Puerto Rico.
