MELBOURNE, Australia – A homicide inquiry was launched on Friday after human remains were discovered in a bin at a self-storage warehouse in Melbourne, Australia.
Victoria Police said in a statement that shortly after 11:00 am local time, they were called to the facility on Milgate Street in Oakleigh South where workers had found the remains.
Detective Senior Sergeant Pixie Fuhrmeister told reporters the remains could have been there for “in excess of 15 years.”
“We’re treating the matter as suspicious at this point,” she said. “It’s possibly a long-term decomposition of a body” that police were investigating.
She said police would be looking at cold cases as well as long term missing persons.
“The matter is being treated as suspicious and the remains will be sent for further forensic testing,” Victoria Police said.
