LORIENT, France – Australian cyclist Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) was forced on Wednesday to abandon the Tour de France race ahead of stage five due to illness.
The wearer of the point leader’s green jersey in 2017 was forced to drop out of his fourth participation in the French cycling race after waking up vomiting and with a fever the previous night.
This is a damaging loss for Team Sunweb, which may fall behind on account of Matthews’s – a favorite at this edition of the Tour – absence in the upcoming stages.
Belgium’s Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal), winner of this year’s Strade Bianche, also dropped out after dislocating his shoulder in a stage four crash with other cyclists.
In total, five racers have abandoned the Tour de France, including Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana).
