JOHANNESBURG – One person was killed and 20 others injured on Tuesday when a charter plane crashed on the northern outskirts of South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, authorities said.
The plane crashed into a building near Wonderboom Airport and burst into flames.
ER24, a private paramedic service, confirmed that the accident resulted in a fatality.
“ER24 paramedics along with other services arrived on the scene to find the wreckage which was also alight,” company spokesman Russel Meiring said. “Several patients were trapped in the aircraft and their injuries ranged from minor to critical.”
Johan Pieterse, a local emergency services official, told SABC television that the fatality was someone in the plane’s cockpit and that two of those injured were people on the ground.
South Africa’s civil aviation authority will investigate to determine the cause of the accident, Pieterse said.
