SANTO DOMINGO – Dominican Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez said on Tuesday that his office will train 32 prosecutors to raise awareness about human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
The initiative is sponsored by the Dominican country office of the US Agency for International Development.
The 32 prosecutors will be trained to develop awareness programs aimed at school officials, the Women’s Affairs Ministry, and scores of municipal officials, who will, in turn, train as many as at least 12,600 student leaders on how to avoid being a victim of traffickers.
“With this new action, we will continue reasserting our commitment to effectively fighting this scourge, starting with the important work of prevention training,” Rodriguez said.
Convictions for migrant or sex trafficking and child pornography grew 58 percent – from 15 to 26 – last year in the Dominican Republic, according to a report released in March by the foreign ministry.
