MOSCOW – Paraguay’s president-elect Mario Abdo Benitez met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations.
Putin congratulated Abdo Benitez, who was set to take office on Aug. 15, on his soon-to-be head of state role.
The Russian president said at the start of the meeting that he hoped Abdo Benitez’s stay would serve to foment the two countries bilateral ties.
Abdo Benitez pointed out the two nations’ shared history, notably the contribution of the White Russian officers to the Chaco War against Bolivia (1932-1935).
As a token of appreciation, the Paraguayan politician presented Putin with orders awarded to Russian officers as well as a statuette made from bullets used during the war.
