Torrential Rains Lash Taiwan amid Typhoon Warning

TAIPEI – Taiwan’s met department warned on Thursday a low pressure system near Dongsha Island could soon develop into a typhoon even as heavy rainfall lashed central and southern Taiwan and caused floods, landslides and roadblocks.

The island’s defense ministry said in a statement the army would act quickly to minimize the effects of the natural disaster and secure people’s lives and belongings.

The Central Weather Bureau had earlier predicted that tropical storm Kami could strengthen into a typhoon and issued an alert.

Taiwan’s military has already started rescue operations in affected areas and 36,000 troops are on the stand-by, along with S-70C and EC225 helicopters, AAV7 amphibious assault vehicles and other equipment.
