Gun Salute Goes Off in London Park to Mark UK’s Prince Philip 97th Birthday

LONDON – Prince Philip, husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II, has turned 97 – an occasion that on Monday was celebrated with a 41-gun salute in London’s Hyde Park.

As per tradition, members of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired off the rounds as part of official celebrations marking the Duke of Edinburgh’s birthday, which was on Sunday.

“Wishing His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh a very Happy 97th Birthday,” Buckingham Palace tweeted in his honor.

The prince has retired from royal duties, having carried out his last official engagement in August 2017.

This year, Philip’s birthday fell one day after the “Trooping the Color,” the official celebrations held to mark the queen’s birthday.

Queen Elizabeth II is the world’s longest-reigning living monarch.
