Uruguay’s Governors Discuss 23 Sustainable Development Projects

MONTEVIDEO – The congress of Uruguayan provincial governors met Wednesday to discuss 23 projects designed for a project promoting sustainable development and equality.

Santiago Soto, deputy director of the Budget and Planning Office (OPP), told reporters that the project involved the European Union and the United Nations.

Projects will be implemented across the South American country, and each would be slated to receive 1.5 million pesos ($48,180), Soto said.

“These are projects that have a direct impact on environmental issues, the management of coastal areas and the disposal of wastes,” Soto said.

“In the (southwestern) area of Libertad, there is a project for management of a coastal area that will require an entire system for the collection (of residual materials) and the preventive management of some activities causing damage along the coast,” the OPP official said.

The meeting was attended by several mayors and by Mireira Villar, the resident coordinator in Uruguay for the UN Development Program.
