ROME – Greece’s Maria Sakkari upset the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday, advancing to the third round of the Italian Open for the first time in her career.
World No. 42 Sakkari needed two hours and 22 minutes to eliminate former world No. 1 Pliskova, currently world No. 5, making this the first Top 5 win in the Greek player’s career.
Sakkari, 22, beat the Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the tournament’s first round on Tuesday, and is set to play Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.
