Belt Homers as Giants Beat Reds 5-3

SAN FRANCISCO – Brandon Belt hit a solo homer to lead off a four-run fourth inning as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Belt smashed his eighth homer of the season in the fourth inning off starting pitcher Tyler Mahle (3-5), who was charged with the loss.

Pierce Johnson (2-1) entered in the fifth episode to lead a group of five Giants relievers who limited the Reds to five scoreless innings.

The Reds hesitated in withdrawing their starter Mahle after Belt’s homer, which they would later regret as Venezuela’s Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run single, followed by a go-ahead RBI-grounder by Andrew McCutchen.

The Giants added a fifth run thanks to an RBI-single by Kelby Tomlison to score Brandon Crawford at the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.
