ALGECIRAS, Spain – Spanish police have seized almost six tons of cocaine found in a shipping container ostensibly transporting bananas from the Colombian city of Medellin, Spain’s Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said on Tuesday.
Some 5.8 tons of the stimulant hidden in the shipping container was intercepted by police in the southern port city of Algeciras and three people have been arrested in connection with the discovery, Zoido told a press conference.
Spanish authorities estimated that the market value of the drug haul, once cut and supplied, could have been as high as 2.8 billion euros ($3.3 billion).
It was the largest drug haul on Spanish territory so far this century and the second largest ever after the 7-ton seizure from a boat in 1999, the conservative minister added.
The container was apparently destined for the port of El Prat de Llobregat, near Barcelona.
