CAPE TOWN – Surfboards colorfully embellished by 10 different artists will be auctioned in South Africa to raise money for ocean charities as part of a film and art festival.
The Wavescapes Art Board auction, to be held on Tuesday, aims to support organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council and, on this occasion, has chosen women as its main theme.
“The Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival has announced a focus on women in an expanded lineup of ocean-conscious events in 2017,” the organization said in a statement.
The event has campaigned since 2005 to ensure that the fish we eat are ethically sourced.
Each of the South Africa-based artists involved took a different approach to the project, from Alexis Aronson’s underwater seascape to Chris Auret and Marti Lund’s portrait of an old man superimposed over a sunset on the ocean.
Wavescape said it was premiering an all-women surf film, “Blue Road,” as well as “Light Waves,” a photographic exhibition of women in surfing.
Last year, the auction raised over $28,000, with the money going to a South African parasurfing team who were about to travel to the world championships in California, conservation group Shark Spotters, surf therapy charity Waves for Change and the National Sea Rescue Institute, a search and rescue NGO.
