US Provides $70 Million to Puerto Ricoís Water Utility

SAN JUAN Ė The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided $70 million to Puerto Ricoís AAA water utility to restore services affected by Hurricane Maria, the agencyís director for the Caribbean, Alejandro de la Campa, said on Wednesday.

The funds will be made available to the government-run utility immediately to address needs in the wake of the stormís devastation, the official said.

On Tuesday, FEMA announced the approval of more than $44 million to assist people affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and $90 million for emergency infrastructure projects.

The federal agency has also granted the islandís AEE electric utility $54.6 million for repairs to the grid and service restoration.

FEMA, which is coordinating all US federal agenciesí efforts in Puerto Rico, has more than 10,000 employees from different federal agencies and departments on the island.

After Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, the islandís government estimated the storm damage at $80 billion.
