Ofelia Churns in Atlantic, Could Reach Spain Next Week as Hurricane

MIAMI – Tropical Storm Ofelia continues churning in the Atlantic and could reach the northwestern coast of Spain as a hurricane next week, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday.

Ofelia, which is about 1,265 kilometers (785 miles) southwest of the Azores, is “forecast to become a hurricane by Wednesday night or Thursday,” the NHC said in its 0900 GMT advisory.

The system has maximum sustained winds of 100 kph (65 mph) and is moving southeast at 9 kph (6 mph).

Ofelia is expected to pass between Portugal’s Azores and Madeira islands on a track that could take it toward the coast of the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia.

Both Galicia and continental Portugal are in the storm’s forecast cone for next Monday.

“A southeastward to east-southeastward motion with some reduction in forward speed is expected through Thursday, followed by a turn toward the east-northeast by Thursday night or Friday,” the NHC said.
