WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump said he doesn’t believe that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called him a “moron,” but in case he did say that, he tweeted a warning: “I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”
Trump made those remarks during an interview with Forbes magazine that was released on Tuesday.
“I think it’s fake news,” the president said about a report on the NBC network that Tillerson in private called Trump a “moron” after a July 20 meeting in the Pentagon with members of the White House national security team.
“But if he did (say) that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win,” he added.
Last week Trump said he has “total confidence” in Tillerson and lashed back at NBC for having invented that story.
For his part, Tillerson appeared before the press to deny he had ever thought of resigning and to speak well of his relation with Trump.
Tillerson did not wish to comment on whether it was true that he insulted Trump but rather dismissed the report as “petty nonsense,” while his spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, said “the secretary did not use that type of language to speak about the president of the United States. He does not use that language to speak about anyone.”
Trump and Tillerson spoke on the phone last week and this Tuesday are having lunch in the White House together with Defense Secretary James Mattis.
