Pence, Mogherini Discuss North Korea, Western Balkans

WASHINGTON – The Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, spoke on the phone on Wednesday to discuss the security situation in North Korea and the future of the Western Balkans, the White House said.

Pence thanked Mogherini “for her leadership on the Western Balkans,” and reinforced the US commitment to working with the EU “to advance the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the countries in the region.”

The leaders also discussed North Korea, with Pence welcoming the EU’s support, and highlighted the “enduring strength of the US-EU relationship” in facing the “shared” security challenges posed by Pyongyang’s ongoing nuclear weapons program.

While the EU has repeatedly stressed the importance of seeking diplomatic solutions to the North Korean situation, the US has refused to rule out a military response.
