China Landslide Death Toll Climbs to 25

BEIJING – The death toll in a landslide in China’s Sichuan province climbed to 25 after rescue teams found the body of the last missing person on Wednesday, state news agency Xinhua reported.

The landslide, caused by heavy rainfall in the area in the last few days, had struck the village of Gengdi, inhabited mainly by members of the Yi ethnic minority group, around 6:00 am Tuesday, local officials said.

Another five people were injured in the disaster that took place in the same province that was hit by an earthquake hours later, killing at least 19 and injuring 247.

On June 24, another landslide in Ximno village, also located in Sichuan, had left over 100 people dead or missing.
