Paraguayan Livestock Show Serves as Beauty Contest for Cattle

ASUNCION – Ranchers attending Expo Feria 2017, the largest livestock show in Paraguay, are getting a firsthand look at the animals that have helped make the South American country one of the world’s top beef exporters.

The fair opened on Saturday in Mariano Roque Alonso, a city in Greater Asuncion, where ranchers and meat industry executives are learning about market conditions, looking for buyers and cutting deals.

Visitors to the fair also have an opportunity to view champion livestock, including some animals that weigh up to 1,000 kilos (1.1 tons).

Sheep, horses and rabbits, among other animals, are also on display at the livestock show, which runs until July 23.

Organizers estimate that 1 million people will visit Expo Feria 2017.

Paraguay is the world’s No. 6 meat exporter and has set the goal of moving into the No. 5 spot by 2020 by entering new markets.
